I learned long ago you don’t make money by accident when farming. In fact, doing everything “right” increases the chances of profit, but it is certainly no guarantee.

What is doing everything ”right”? It means making good decisions and using all available information. It means reducing risk, controlling what can be controlled, and planning for success. It means setting goals and improving from the previous season.

Taking an intentional approach to agricultural production is essential for doing it “right”. Being intentional is empowering.

One way to be intentional is to learn what other farmers are doing, see what is new in the industry, and stay abreast of the latest research.

The Southern Farm Show takes place at the NC State Fairgrounds each January. The show hosts key industry events and is known as the region’s annual meeting place for farmers and agricultural leaders. This show is for farmers, as well as allied professionals, including landscapers and excavation contractors.

N.C. Cooperative Extension, Caldwell County Center and Farm Bureau have partnered to connect local farmers with the Southern Farm Show. The Caldwell Farm Bureau is chartering a bus for Caldwell farmers and residents to attend the show. The bus will depart from Granite Falls at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, and arrive back in Caldwell County at 6 p.m.

If you would like to attend, contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Caldwell County Center at 828-757-1290.

Another great opportunity is the NC Cattlemen’s Conference in Hickory, NC on February 21-23. This conference is also a great way to learn and connect.

Dr. Daniel Poole

Dr. Daniel Poole, NC State University Beef Reproduction Professor, interacts with folks at the NC Cattlemen’s Conference in Hickory, NC.

Troy Bockelmann from Cattle Fax will provide cattlemen with a marketing update. Also, there will be sessions covering Genetic Tools to Improve Beef Cattle Production Efficiency, Selecting Beef Cattle for Functional Efficiency, and Heifer Management Decisions.

I am especially looking forward to Dr. Alan Franzluebbers’ presentation of his experiments of Nitrogen Management in Tall Fescue Pastures.
