4-H Project Books

N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center is planning a 4-H project book training for those that are new to the 4-H program, or those that need a little help putting their books together.

Some of you may have never heard the term 4-H project book, so let me explain. A 4-H project book is a record of activities, knowledge gained and awards that have been given in one particular program area. The program area can be on dogs, horses, robotics, gardening, fishing or any subject the child may be interested in. The child chooses their program area and will keep records of all the things he or she has done or learned during the course of working on that project. Most projects are completed in a year and some may be something that a child has worked on for six months. The length of time a child works on the project is determined by how fast and how much the child is going to do in that certain project. Project books are a great tool to help youth learn life skills like record keeping. These life skills are important for youth to learn as they will become adults.

There are several program areas such as Horse, Livestock, and STEM Electric that require a project record for participation in future events. Once project records are completed by the 4-H member they are turned in by the county deadline to be judged. If they place 1st or 2nd in the county, the record will then be sent to the state 4-H office to compete in the state competition. The county deadline to have books turned in for work completed in 2020 for Currituck County 4-H members will be  January 31, 2021.

The training will be held Tuesday, December 8 via a Zoom meeting starting at 6 p.m. We will walk participants through the process page by page and will be available for questions. You must pre-register through Eventbrite and will receive the link to the Zoom meeting the day before the meeting. Registration link: https://4hprojectbooks.eventbrite.com

If you have any questions and for more information or accommodations for persons with disabilities please contact or Stephanie Minton via email at stephanie_minton@ncsu.edu, or Sherry Fischlschweiger, slfischl@ncsu.edu no later than five business days before the event.
