Cabarrus Small-Scale Poultry Processing Equipment


Program Purpose

The Cabarrus County Poultry Processing Equipment Rental Program is designed to support small-scale poultry producers and backyard growers by providing access to essential equipment for safe, sanitary, and humane poultry processing.

This unit is intended for processing 30 birds or fewer per day and is suitable for on-farm or backyard use.

All the essential tools you need in one easy rental. Whether you're new to processing or just need the right equipment, this setup has everything you need to get the job done efficiently. Eligibility & Pre-Rental Requirements


To rent the poultry processing equipment, participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Cabarrus County resident

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Agree to comply with all program policies, safety standards, and inspection expectations

  • Complete and sign all required documentation:

  • Rental application

  • User agreement and liability acknowledgment

  • Equipment checkout and return forms



  • Comply with all municipal, county, and state regulations


  • Poultry processing is not permitted within the City of Concord city limits, regardless of equipment rental



Fees


Base Rental Fee


  • $50 for a three-day rental period


Additional Fees


  • $100 cleaning fee if sanitation standards are not met

  • Assessed after inspection

  • Payable by cash or check within 10 days



  • Renter is responsible for all repair or replacement costs for damaged, lost, or missing equipment



Fees support equipment maintenance, inspection time, and long-term program sustainability.

Reservations


  • Reservations must be made online under Cooperative Extension Rentals:
    https://secure.rec1.com/NC/cabarrus-county/catalog

  • Reservations must be submitted at least one (1) week in advance

  • Equipment rentals are available weekends only

  • Rental period is three (3) consecutive days

  • Pickup: Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

  • Return: Monday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.



  • Equipment may only be booked for the current calendar year

  • Reservations for the following year open January 1




Required Training


Renters must meet one of the following:

  • Successfully complete a Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension poultry processing training within five (5) years of checkout
    OR

  • Demonstrate equivalent experience, evaluated through an individual consultation with the Livestock & Field Crops Agent


Training and consultations cover:

  • Humane handling and processing

  • Food safety and sanitation

  • Proper equipment setup, operation, and cleaning

  • Local and state regulatory considerations


Transportation Requirements


The renter is responsible for transporting all equipment safely.

  • A large SUV, pickup truck, or trailer is required

  • Equipment includes large, heavy, and bulky items (scalder, plucker, tables)

  • All equipment must be:

  • Properly secured

  • Protected from weather, especially electrical components

  • Transported in a clean and safe vehicle



  • Do not overload vehicles or stack equipment unsafely



Inspection & Liability


  • Equipment is returned to:
    715 Cabarrus Ave W, Concord, NC 28027

  • Equipment inventory is reviewed at checkout and return

  • Extension staff may use a white-cloth test to verify cleanliness

  • If any single item fails inspection, the cleaning fee will be assessed

  • Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension assumes no liability for accidents, injuries, or property damage resulting from use or misuse of equipment


Hints for a Successful Processing Day


Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension hosts an annual Poultry Processing Day Hands-on Workshop for an in-depth, guided look at the steps involved in harvesting poultry. If you require additional assistance in processing your birds, please contact Sarah Newman prior to rental. She can be reached by email at sarah_newman@ncsu.edu or by phone at 704-216-8970.The following items are not included in the equipment rental but are necessary or strongly recommended for a successful and sanitary processing day:
  • Outdoor-rated, grounded extension cord (for plucker)

  • Standard grill-size propane tank

  • Cleaning supplies (dish soap, disinfectant, paper towels, trash bags)

  • Sanitized, food-grade coolers with ice

  • Buckets for blood, offal, feathers, and clean water

  • Food-grade hoses

  • Approved location for composting or disposing of waste


Make sure to plan ahead and have these items ready before beginning your processing day.
