Backyard Chicken Series – Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension

Interested in raising backyard chickens but not sure where to start? Join NC Cooperative Extension – Cabarrus County Center for the Backyard Chicken Series, a multi-session educational program designed to help new and prospective poultry owners build a strong foundation for successful backyard flock management.

This four-week series will cover the essential topics needed to raise healthy birds, avoid common problems, and feel confident caring for your flock. Participants may attend one or all sessions, but attending the full series is encouraged for the best learning experience.

Class Schedule

  • April 8 — Breeds and Brooding
    Learn how to choose the right breeds and properly care for chicks during the brooding stage.
  • April 15 — Nutrition and Housing
    Understand feed requirements, coop design, and housing considerations for backyard flocks.
  • April 22 — Health and Disease
    Learn how to keep birds healthy, recognize signs of illness, and prevent common poultry diseases.
  • April 29 — NC Egg and Meat Laws
    Review North Carolina regulations related to selling eggs, processing poultry, and local requirements.
