Collapse ▲N.C. A&T State University and its Strategic Planning Council are hosting our 2019 Grassroots Leadership Conference on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, in Kannapolis at the Laureate Center. The Grassroots Leadership Conference is an annual forum that brings together a diverse group of stakeholders throughout the state of North Carolina. This is a FREE event, but we need people to register IN ADVANCE.
Theme: Shaping the Future of Communities Through Conversations That Matter
Time: Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. | Program: 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Our keynote address will be given by Dr. Rachel Seidman, adjunct assistant professor and director of the Southern Oral History Program at UNC-Chapel Hill at the start of the conference. She will be presenting on Recording Conversations that Matter: Using Oral History to Shape Healthy Futures for Today’s Communities. Other session speakers will include:
- Everyday Democracy will introduce its “Dialogue to Change Program” as a process for engaging diverse community members in processes to understand and solve local problems. Their model also encourages examination of issues through a racial and intergenerational lens.
- North Carolina Cooperative Extension will share information about their EYFP program that has been instrumental in empowering youth and adults to work with community leaders to educate the public about the impact of the opioid epidemic in our communities.
- NC State University, College of Design will share how human-stories (relatable to everyday people) are grounding climate change strategies and exposing the realities faced living in flood-prone places and steps they have taken to become more resilient.
- NC Department of Health and Human Services will explore the history of health equity issues among demographic groups in North Carolina and resources that communities can use to incorporate health equity strategies and foster collaboration to address health disparities.
- The conference will share best practices and strategies that community residents can use to identify priorities and opportunities and work together with others to foster positive change.
