Learn more about our furry and feathered friends. Animal Science is broken into multiple categories: Livestock, Horse, Poultry, Dairy, Pets & Veterinary Science.
Livestock
For 4-H purposes, livestock includes beef cattle, meat goat, sheep and hogs. These animals are produce for food consumption or for breeding purposes. 4-H offers opportunities to learn more in a variety of ways.
Shows
Traditionally, 4-H’ers raise their own animals and show them at fairs and other events. Joining our animal science 4-H club will help you keep up with upcoming shows and opportunities. Some of our Cabarrus County 4-H’ers are able to continue this tradition, while others work with our 4-H Partner Farms. Working with these farms allows youth to get first hand experience without needing to live on acreage. The farms agree to care and transport the animals, while the 4-H youth agree to help train and care for the animal. These agreements are on a case-by-case basis and are individualized to the needs of the youth and farm. Educational Contests
North Carolina 4-H offers a variety of contests based on different skill sets.
Livestock Skillathon
This annual state event is a combination of judging, identification (breed, feed, equipment, meat cut, etc) and knowledge quiz. Can be done individually or a group. Registration in fall.
Livestock Judging
In this contest, you get to be the judge of a class of four animals and rank them as a show judge would. Individuals and teams score points for judging both on paper and then to give oral reasonings to justify your answers. Registration and Event in Fall.
Horse
4-H’ers can take part in shows and contests outside of 4-H. These are the 4-H sanctioned events.
Shows
Qualifying Shows
4-H’ers select on of four area shows to compete in order to earn their qualification to show at the state show. The South Central show is held normally at Lake Waccamaw in early May.
State 4-H Horse Show
Held each year in July, 4-H’ers from across the state participate in their 5 day horse show. Held in Raleigh at the James Hunt Horse Complex.
Educational Events
Horse Bowl
Teams of 4-5 compete in a quiz bowl style double elimination competition, complete with buzzers and timers. A great way to showcase your horse knowledge. Resources are available for study at the Extension Office. Contact your 4-H club volunteer to start a team. District Contest in early Jan/Feb. State Contest in spring.
Horse Judging
In this contest, you get to be the judge of a class of four horses/rider combos and rank them as a show judge would. Individuals and teams score points for judging both on paper and then to give oral reasonings to justify your answers. State Contest in March.
Hippology
Strictly a “Pen & Paper” test based on your equine knowledge. May include ID, health & wellness, statistics and much more. Compete individually, but scores may be compiled for a team. State contest in Spring.
Poultry
Poultry includes so many avian species! The most popular are chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, but also includes quail, peafowl, guineas, doves and others.
Shows
The Cabarrus County Fair and NC State Fair both offer multiple classes for a huge variety of species and breeds. This is the best way to get started showing poultry. The Youth Market Turkey Show gives youth the opportunity to raise up to three commercial meat turkeys to show at the State Fair. Registration is in early spring. Poults must be picked up in Raleigh over a specific three day window in late spring.

Poultry Judging
In this contest, you get to be the judge of a class of poultry related entries and rank them as a judge or USDA food inspector would. Classes include: Laying Hens, Carcass & Meat Cuts, Market Eggs (Candled), Exterior of Eggs, and Broken out Market Eggs) Individuals and teams score points for judging both on paper and then to give oral reasonings to justify your answers. State Contest in Summer.
Dairy
Dairy animals include cattle and goat, and to a lesser known quantity, sheep.

Dairy Cattle are the most common species we work with to show at the Cabarrus County Fair. There is not a Dairy Goat show at the Cabarrus County Fair.

Pets
While this area is vast, there are not 4-H sanctioned events that will allow you to compete. Completing a 4-H Pet project is the perfect way to learn more about your animal and there are some opportunities for non-4-H events to get involved.
Shows
The Cabarrus Arena & Events Center hosts a variety of pet related shows throughout the year. Please check out their calendar for a way you can be involved. Many of these shows will reach out to 4-H to secure volunteers so don’t be afraid to ask. Regular shows include: US Alpaca Show, dog breed shows, dog agility shows, Repticon, bird showcases. Pet rabbits are also eligible for entry in the Cabarrus County Fair.
Educational Events
While we don’t have any 4-H sanctioned pet contests, everyone has the opportunity to compete in the Presentation & Public Speaking Contest held in April/May at County Activity Day.
Veterinary Science
Again, this area is a great learning section of Animal Science. While we don’t have any specific contests based on veterinary science, youth are encouraged to compete in Presentation & Public Speaking Contest as well as any of the above listed educational events to get a well rounded understanding of the huge variety of species that you may encounter as a Veterinarian.
